CPSNL Number (Licence for Independent Practice)

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (CPSNL) grants medical licences that are needed for independent practice.

  • For a new license, complete the application for medical registration (physiciansapply.ca, Medical Council of Canada)
  • Applications can be made any time during the year; submit renewals by December 15th annually
  • Fees are determined during application
  • Memorial University residency program graduates obtain licences through paper applications directly through the CPSNL

Billing Number

You must register through the Medical Care Plan (MCP) to bill for insured services provided.

  • To register, submit the completed MCP Provider Registration Form
  • A licence to practice from the CPSNL is required
  • There is no cost associated with registration

Workplace NL

You must register with WorkplaceNL to bill for workplace compensation claims.

  • Apply by emailing the Vendor Liaison at the Finance Department of the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Review Division. Use the staff search and select “Finance” from the Department dropdown to find the current contact.
  • Include the following information:
    • Practice start date
    • Home address and telephone number
    • Practice address and telephone number
    • Fax number
    • MCP Provider Number
  • Applications are typically processed within 24 hours.

Hospital Privileges

Requirements for hospital privileges are determined by health authorities; each may have different policies and requirements. Generally, copies of the following documents are required:

  • Medical diploma
  • Resume
  • Confidentiality agreement
  • LMCC II exam results
  • CFPC exam results
  • CMPA proof of insurance
  • Medical licence
  • Police clearance
  • Immunization records

Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA)

The NLMA is a non-profit professional organization funded primarily by its members. The NLMA represents the views of physicians in the province with governments, the media, and the public. It also advocates on behalf of all patients for a fair and equitable health care system in Newfoundland and Labrador.

  • Apply using the online form
  • Membership is mandatory for physicians licensed by the CPSNL (full or provisional category)
  • Canadian Medical Association (CMA) membership is optional
  • Fee: $2,195 (with CMA membership); $1,700 (NLMA only); considerations are made for those on sick leave, parental leave, etc.
